Between [info]poisonrational and[info]lucylou's journal entries  for today, my LJ Flist is fulla sauce!

(Sauce is of the line-drawn, hand-illustrated varieties, but  do I need to say possibly NSFW? Well, then, NSFW - but sauce of both male, female and not-exactly-innocent-memories-of-youth varieties is therein. Rawr.)

tastebuds

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 1:34 PM
Every so often something reminds me of just how little sense of taste I have.

At Slimelight Dorothy could smell I had minty breath so asked if she could have some chewing gum. I didn't have any chewing gum, but offered her an extra strong mint which to me is something that I can taste the mint in (unlike say polos or mint tictacs).

She sucked it and was soon fanning her mouth at the extreme mintyness of it, something I've never experienced before.

Culture

I have been very cultural lately, reading book, seeing plays, going to book launches - all sorts.

I have realised, howeve, that it's possible to do quite a lot of things in London for free or for less money than you would think. Managed to get a "pay what you can" ticket to see Seize the Day at the Tricycle on Saturday afternoon. This was good as the full price is £15 and that was more than I could really have paid. That said cheap tickets for The Old Vic and The National Theatre are £10 (and if you satnd at the Old Vic, even less), which is considerably lower than the £50 or so that a lot of West End theatre costs. have not yet tried to see how much it is to see the plays at the more commercially-minded theatres but may see soon.

I am seeing these plays because I am teaching a Theatre Appreciation class in very north London. I was supposed to be doing another one, but there were not anough sign-ups so it got cancelled.

-----

In non-teaching news, I have started posting pictures, text and video to my What's That Vegetable? blog - I am not sure how many vegetables I will end up covering - but I have about 32 videos, apart from any other things I might put there.

I have also got involved in a sketch group and am doing voices for various things (eg Ed Parnell used some audio I did for him ages ago to make an animation - I really hope he doesn't think I actually look like this though!)

The Ship of Fools gig last Friday went very well indeed and I think I was probably the best I have ever been live. It is a shame it's not a more central venue, though, as it's hard to get audience in.

Ok, so I'm haveing a bit of a prob.
I want to pain some candles.
But, I was reading that I should use Candle painting medium.

I work at a craft store, and a bunch of my coworkers are pretty crafty.
We didn't have anything called Candle painting medium and after talking to a almost all of my coworkers they had no idea what candle painting medium is and had never heard of it.

One of my coworkers says I should just use craft paint and paint hem anyways but I don't know what that would do once someone started to burn the candle.
I'm not sure if it was start a fire of some sort.
Help plz?

Alan Tudyk (Wash)

and Morena Baccarin (Inara)

are both in the new ABC sci-fi show V! So if you missed them being all cool and space-y and stuff now you can see it again. Tudyk plays some human dude and Baccarin plays the leader of the visitors. Exciting stuff, people! You can watch the pilot on Hulu and probably ABC's website.

Anna Katharina's album Saitensprung

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 6:30 PM
The album is pretty good and varied - mum particularly likes the song Flying Cow.

The presentation is pretty good and inside the booklet are lots of nice photos of Anna Katharina and her thoughts about the songs.

However there is one pic that isn't quite as good as the others. It is where she's showing off the tattoo on her back and is a nude shot where she's just holding the violin. Now Anna Katharina is a beautiful sexy women, but even so it is a photo with an inch or two of butt crack visible so not the best of photos.

Katzenjammers + Slimelight

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 6:18 PM
I woke at 4, then put the heating on for a bath. I ate then bathed and pondered the day. It was too late to go to Witchfest (which I hadn't been that bothered about), but Ashleigh had mentioned going for drinks somewhere which was a possibility. Ant also was curious about doing something in London, so I reckoned we could check out Katzenjammers.

I phoned Ashleigh and she had plans by then, but Ant was interested. He was toying with inviting his friend Faith but said she was gutted at loosing her teddy at Whitby. We decided against this. We arranged to meet in All Bar One London Bridge in an hour and a halfs time. I phoned Heather in the meantime then had to rush to get ready. I was still 15 mins early, so I needn't have rushed so much. Got a Paulaner then found somewhere to sit keeping a wary eye on the pub's oddball who seemed to be talking to himself and having arguments with himself. He looked harmless but I kept a wary eye on him.

Ant arrived a bit later and we chatted over a beer. We then headed to Katzenjammers which surprisingly was where the map claimed it would be. So why go there? Well I was curious as Florian reckoned it was a more authentic German experience than Zeitgeist, and Steve K had said good things about it.

So Katzenjammers is a basement venue that is reached by a relatively normal looking doorway from the street. Inside it is divided into at least two decent sized rooms with bench seats in it. The barmaids are dressed in Bavarian style costumes, BUT the lass who served us Ant thought was Irish. We had a couple of beers and talked in German with both of us making some screw ups. I think I could think of some words better than Ant, but hey. Beer wise they had some nice stuff, though the very delicious Aventinus was at prices only so far found in the Rake!!!!

Afterwards Ant persuaded me to go to Slimelight as some of the Coventry mob were down. Sounded good to me. We got to Angel and Ant was feeling hungry so I suggested eating at Slimelight. We paid and went in and I enquired about renewing my membership, which was good and was told to come back after 3am.

I showed Ant the courtyard and the new cake cafe on the groundfloor. There we found Anki and friends aswell. Grabbed a baked potato then a slice of cake. We chatted away and Rob took some photos. Dorothy remembered me and my name from M'era Luna. After chatting for quite a while I felt the urge to dance so danced a bit. A couple of people caught my eye, but that was about it despite them both being nearby.

I went to get another drink then found Ant sat waiting patiently by the toilets so told him where the ground floor dancefloor was. I got a drink then spent ages chatting in the cafe.

I then went back to the dancefloor and was dancing near a lass who might have been interested. I thought I should say something but what? Anyway this little cute Italian looking deathrock lass kept almost dancing into me. A while later my joints needed a rest so I sat down. 30 secs later this cute little lass plonks herself down next to me quite abruptly rather than gently lowering herself down. Even I knew this wasn't by chance as there was space for maybe 20 other people to sit elsewhere in the room. I thought I should say something but what??? She sat facing forwards, so I was just thinking I'd nearly finished my beer if I drank it quickly I could offer her one. Good plan I thought, but by the time I'd finished (about 1.5 mins later) she'd left :-( The lass I'd been interested in the dancefloor had also vanished too :-( Ah well easy come easy go.

I went for the beer wondering if I'd spot anyone and ended up spending a lot of time talking to Aly and Anki. I went back to the dancefloor and found Ant, Rob and Dorothy. Dorothy thought I'd left, but not yet. We all danced a bit and I was interested in a very beautiful lass who's style of dancing looked familiar. I didn't say anything to her.

The next time I went for a beer she was just in front of me waiting to be served, and I thought now was a golden chance to say something but I didn't.

Went back on the dancefloor till they closed the floor then called it a night.

Bus took a while to arrive, but I got a bagel in Finsbury Park, then walked half way along Finsbury Park looking for an open bus stop. Chatted to the bloke waiting for a bus for a while. Got home and crashed out.

It had been a good night.

Magnum + misc band at other gig

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 4:36 PM
After work on Friday I headed to Angel. First stop was food which had to be quick and easy, so I visited Burger King. I then went to the Angel and tried some of the beers in their beer festival. The plum beer was gorgeous so I had a couple of pints of it before trying the strong Belgian beer which they'd only serve in halves. That also tasted nice.

I then went to the Islington Academy and grabbed a spot on the second row, so decided not to drink anything at the gig. Magnum's support act were ok, but they struggled for the first half of their set to get the crowd behind them. Still they were not bad at what they did.

There was then a break where an absolute giant of a man ended up in front of me, so it took some skillfull manoeuvring to see the stage. During the break a couple of short women ended up at my side and one of them said hi and that she'd met me several times and I was often with Jo. Well Jodie is also known as Jo Squirrel. A while later Magnum came on, and well most of the band look great but Bob the lead singer is looking a bit worn and wrinkled. Still they belted out some great songs, even if I suspect we heard most of the new album the number of songs they played from it.

After the gig I struggled to leave the building, then caught two busses to the Gaff arranging to meet Jodie outside. Jodie had a flyer for me that'd get me in cheap. We went in then I went to the toilet and got a pint of Bee Sting which is a lethal but carbonated Perry. I joined Jodie and Nimm down the front, getting there just before the headline band came on. Jodie asked about Magnum and asked if they played the Spirit, which they didn't then she said about the fuss when they tried to get rid of it from their set the first time round. The headline band at the Gaff came on and trouble with them is the sound was yanked up too high and even with earplugs in it was bloody loud, and the sound was suffering for it. They were not bad at all, and the drummer was suitably animated and manic. The bass player later had a bit of a strop and threw his bass to the floor slightly splintering the stage. He had another bass to continue playing though. He later came on with an elephant shaped bass complete with tusks that he later had some smoke billowing from the end for smoke on water. The guitarist a couple of times played blues numbers but while the notes were ok it was just too much too quickly after each other to be good. I don't think Gary Moore is worried.

The end came and I desperately needed a sit down as I'm not used to standing for 7 hours in work shoes. I looked at my watch and realised if I finished my drink quickly I could make it on the last train. I said goodbye to Jodie and Nimm (and got a big hug off Jodie) who also tried to persuade me to goto Witch Fest then dashed for the tube. Made it the tube then had a small kebab before zonking out.

It had been a great day.

German

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 3:56 PM
This week as it is the run up to the 20 year anniversary of the re-unification of Germany, Florian and I looked at a story from a book of texts about what reunification meant or what they remember of re-unification from several key people from the time.

We looked at quite a sad tale - the story of the mother of the last person shot trying to escape to the West. What seemed surprising to me was that her son was shot dead only about 6 months before the wall came down. I guess that shows how fast things were moving over in Germany at the time.

Talking to Florian he said that the city of Leipzig was key in the pressures on the government when the protests at the faking of election results got bigger and bigger. Certainly when I saw pictures of the size of the demonstration at the Staasi museum in Leipzig it was impressive.

I also mentioned to Florian that the BBC have a correspondent travelling through East Germany sending in a video blog from time to time which has been pretty good. Take a look at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/franzstrasser/

Silk ties for people who don't wear ties!

I painted these the other day, one of them for my cousin's 18th birthday. I was really pleased - he said he loved it, put it straight on and wore it all night!

shoes

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 1:43 PM
All summer I've been looking for a pair of those neat studded and/or spiked slip on shoes that I've seen at Hot Topic, Good Goth or any of the other mass market stores. However, I wear a womens size 12/ mens size 10, and apparently such a thing does not exist. So when I found a pair of neat mens flip flops (theres a bone foot on the sole) on clearance, I invested in a spike setter and voila! Spikey shoes! Heres to hoping the weather stays nice for a bit longer so I can still wear them this year!

View from a car...

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 8:44 AM
Picture myself and my lady wife sat in the car, on the way out of Guildford. Peter Gabriel is on the stereo, and we're both singing along loudly and with gusto:

"Don't talk back - Just drive the car!
Shut your mouth - I know what you are!
Don't say nothing! - keep your hands on the wheel
Don't turn around - this is for real!"

"Do you think it's worrying that we're both singing along to a domestic row with this much relish?"
(Pause) "Why?"
